Kerman is an inseparable part of Iran’s civilization, where there are many historic, cultural and natural attractions that interestingly some of them are listed by UNESCO. Among them “Ganj Ali Kahn complex” is shining and is impossible to ignore. In fact, it is an urban complex, being built by the local governor of Kerman that includes a bazar, a bath, a caravanserai, a school, a square, a cistern, etc. So let’s visit this wonderful place.
The complex was constructed during Safavid dynasty by “Ganj Ali Khan” whom was the governor of Kerman and did a great job in regional developments. He was one of the most reliable persons for Shah Abas the 1st, the Safavid king. Ganj Ali khan during his 30 years ruling, tried to rebuild and construct many buildings which among them this splendid complex is shining. This marvelous complex was designed by “Mohammad Yazdi” whom also planed “Zein-o-din caravanserai”. This amazing place is still outstanding, however through its history some destructions were done.
Ganj Ali Khan complex is an urban complex that is located near the grand bazar of Kerman, including a bath, a caravanserai, a square, a school, etc. The square, like Naqsh-e jahan square in Isfahan or Amir Chakhmaq square in Yazd, is surrounded by the urban complex. The same it was a place of gathering and holding ceremonies, stablishing near governorship bulidings. To the south stands a linear bazar, 3 km, containing caravanserais, Timcheh, Seray, and so on. Timcheh and Seray are square bazars with private ownerships. In addition a mint, a place of coining, can be seen in this bazar that represents the importance of Kerman at that era. This octagonal building is now a coin museum. In each corner there is a mosque which the main one is standing to the east. Ganj Ali Khan mosque is a simple structure to the north. In addition there used to be a school to the east that was converted to a caravanserai overtime. But, one of the most important sites is the bath, it’s located in the bazar and was in use until about 60 years ago. With its magnificent ornamentations, it looks like an exhibition of arts.
Ganj Ali Khan is a marvelous complex in Kerman that was built 400 years ago by the local governor. In fact it is an urban complex in the heart of the city. The constructions are coded by a number of inscriptions, poems. This complex covers an area of 11000 square meters which is surrounded by the bazaar to the north, south and west.
