Fahraj Mosque

Yazd is one of the oldest cities in Iran. Actually it’s the oldest adobe made and the second oldest city, after Venice. Moreover it’s old texture is registered in the UNESCO’s world heritage list. Well, there has to be lots of attractions which among them Fahraj mosque can be mentioned. This mosque is located in Fahraj, to the south-east of Yazd province and possibly is the first mosque in Iran.

The history
According to some historians such as ; Pirnia, it can be the oldest mosque that was built in Iran during the 7th century, however others believe it was built later. Pirnia says: “ when I was returning from Kerman, I saw a minaret which its architecture attracted me and I went to visit it. As I got there, the residences of Fahraj were trying to destroy the building and construct a new mosque, as it was too old. After some examinations, I persuaded them not to destroy it because based on its architecture it could be built at the beginning of the Islamic period”. So according to Pirnia, this mosque had to be built during the 7th century which is the oldest mosque in Iran, but some other historians believe that it could be built during the 9th or 10th century. Any way it is the only mosque that its architecture never has changed.

The architecture
Fahraj mosque has a rectangular plan with a central courtyard. It does not have decorations or inscriptions, but its simple architecture is the reason of being an important mosque in Yazd province. Also it is an evidence that Based on it Pirnia says it dates back to the 7th century, the beginning of the Islamic period. The praying hall has three pointed-arc spans which the middle one is toward Qibla and wider, in fact they were the main characteristics of the first mosques. In addition there are two Mihrabs in the praying hall. In the praying hall, there are some cubic columns which their decorations on their edge seems to be the result of concluding that it was built later then the 7th century as there are similarities with some other mosques, especially in Cairo. But can’t be a fair conclusion, because the Persian architecture is absolutely different from other styles and rooted in the ancient Iran. In addition there is another praying hall which according to its architecture and materials could have been built later, probably simultaneously with the Minaret, located to the north-east of the mosque which possibly was built during the 10th or 11th century.

Fahraj is a village to the south-east of Iran. There you will visit some historic sites which the most important one is Fahraj mosque. In fact is a controversy that when exactly it was built, but some historians say it refer to the beginning of Islamic period, based on its architecture and materials. However some other believe it could be built during the 9th or 10th century. Well, if you are going to visit Iran never forget seeing this amazing place.
